...how can I possibly walk and feel great again when I need walking aids?"
Very good question. How can you?
The short answer? It depends!
You know first hand it's really NOT fun using these darn aids - walking canes, crutches, walkers. It can hurt to go even a little way. Even trying to get out for some fresh air can be a huge challenge.
Heck - when we were on crutches it was a major challenge just to get from one room to another in the house. It takes a lot of courage and determination to do even the smallest things.
Walking to feel great again when you're like that? Hmmm. Seems an impossible dream and so very far away some days!
But stay with us. Maybe there's something we can do to help you.
Ever come across this?
"significant health benefits can be obtained with a moderate amount of physical activity, preferably daily" Surgeon General of the United States, 1996
Even if you need help walking now there's probably some 'moderate amount of physical activity' you can do. The trick is to find those very simple, very small steps that are just right for you now.
It could be as simple as some hand or arm stretches you do sitting down right up to walking another block or two. And when you do just a little bit more of that each day or week...Wow!
Your Power
Think about that for a minute. You have the power:
to help you feel a bit better
to improve your physical abilities a bit
to enjoy each day a little more
have more energy and
of knowing you can do it yourself
Pretty powerful stuff! So how do we get from here to there?
Our Challenges...
Figure out what amount and type of daily exercise is right for you now.
Figure out how to get you closer to being able to walk well again.
Remember that desire and daily dose of dedication we talked about a while back? Get ready to use it! You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
