Great Shoe Fit 'Secrets'!

Here's a surprising fact. Getting a great shoe fit is NOT rocket science!

Why is that surprising?

Because over 70% of people wearing shoes today are wearing shoes that DO NOT FIT PROPERLY!

Some medical groups put that number as high as 85%! Why is it so hard for people to get their shoes to fit when it's really so simple? This is really just plain nuts!

You being able to walk is pretty important. You being able to walk without pain is even more important.

OK. Time to go to the head of your 'great shoe fit' class with a bit of

Not Rocket Science Stuff

  • Your foot size changes as you get older. Measure your feet each time you buy new shoes.
  • Measured your feet at the end of the day. That's when they're the largest.
  • Most people have one foot that is larger than the other. Measure both and fit the larger one!
  • Choose shoes by how they feel - NOT by the official size. All things are not equal when it comes to 'official' sizing standards.
  • Wear the type of sock that matches the activity you're buying the shoe for. Wear them both when you're measuring your feet and when you're trying the shoes on.

Remember! Walking socks for walking shoes, hiking socks for hiking boots, running socks for running shoes, etc.

    (Read
Walking Socks, Hiking Socks for more info and Thorlo Socks for the best selection).

  • Make sure the shoe matches your arch (or heel to ball) length. This lines up where your toes bend to where the shoe sole is designed to bend. THIS IS A CRITICAL FACTOR IN GOOD FIT! (read Measuring Your Feet for more).
  • Select a shoe that matches the shape of your foot.
  • Try your shoes on standing up. Your feet change shape when you stand on them!
  • Select a shoe that feels comfortable right out of the box. It's a myth that they will 'fit better' as you wear them.
  • Allow for some space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe - typically 3/8"-1/2"
  • Make sure there's adequate space at the widest part of your foot (where the ball of your foot is - where you big toe bends.
  • Your heel should fit comfortably in the shoe heel with a minimum amount of slippage. Heel fit and proper lacing are what holds your shoe properly in place. Your toes need to have some wiggle space.
  • You can use Tex's International Shoe Size Conversion Chart if you need to convert sizes
  • Test walk with the right type of sock on (see above). You and your feet should feel great if everything has been done right.

This may sound corny but when we get a new pair of proper fitting shoes matched with a great pair of walking socks we almost feel as if we really are walking on a cloud. It is that enjoyable!

Congratuiations!

You've passed the 'Not Rocket Science' test and are well on your way to being in the top 25% - people wearing shoes that actually fit. Way to go!
